Customizing technology categories

Owners and adminsUpdated 22 Oct 2026

Group the technologies on every imported CV under your own headings.

Technologies on a profile, such as languages, frameworks, databases and tools, can be grouped into categories. By default, an import keeps the categories found in the CV. Custom tech categories let your organization decide the groups instead.

#Where to manage them

Open Administration → Profiles and find Tech categories. Turn on Use custom tech categories. When it is on, an AI model sorts the technologies of each newly imported CV into the categories in the list. When it is off, nothing changes.

Only owners and admins can change this. As elsewhere on the page, changes are applied when you choose Save settings.

#The default categories

Every organization starts with eight: Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud platforms, Dev tools, Testing, Operating systems and Other. Other is the fallback for technologies that fit nowhere else, so it cannot be deleted.

#Changing categories

  • Add a category. Choose Add category, then enter a name of up to 60 characters and a description of up to 200 characters.
  • Edit a category. Use the edit button on its row to change the name or description.
  • Delete a category. Use the delete button on its row.
  • Restore default categories. Replaces the list with the eight defaults. Nothing is stored until you save.

#What this changes

  • Categories apply when a CV is imported. They do not re-sort profiles you already have. To re-sort a profile, upload its CV again.
  • In the profile editor, each technology has a category field to correct a placement by hand.
  • Exported documents only show the categories a template asks for. See Adopting customizable technology categories.

#Identifiers

Each category has an identifier that templates use. A new category's identifier is its name in lower snake case, so “Data and ML” becomes data_and_ml. The identifier stays the same if you rename the category later, so templates keep working.
