Adopting customizable technology categories

Owners and adminsUpdated 22 Oct 2026

Set up your categories, check them on an imported profile and update your template to show them.

This walks through rolling out custom tech categories from start to finish, from configuring them to confirming they appear in an exported document.

#1. Configure your categories

Open Administration → Profiles, turn on Use custom tech categories, and add, edit or delete categories until they match how your team thinks about skills. Give each one a specific description. Then choose Save settings. See Customizing technology categories.

#2. Check an imported profile

Upload a CV that covers the skills you want sorted, then open the profile and its Technologies section in the editor. Check that each technology has the category you expected. Check the editor first, not the exported document.

If something landed in the wrong place, make the category description more specific, save, and upload the CV again. Categorization runs fresh on every import.

#3. Update your template

Exported documents do not pick up new categories on their own. A template shows a category only if it reads it by identifier, as in:

Template tag
{{ category_tech["data_and_ml"] | join(", ") }}

The Sourcemint built-in template lists whichever categories have technologies, so it follows your categories without changes. For your own template, add a tag for each category you want. See the Template variables reference.

Preview the template under Templates → DOCX templates and download a real profile to confirm each category shows up. The preview uses a fictional sample profile, so a new category may be empty there.

#Common questions

#Do I need to update every template?

No, only the ones where you want grouped output. A template that reads the flat technologies list keeps working.

#A category is missing from the exported document

Almost always the template does not read that category's identifier. Work out its identifier, which is the name in lower snake case, and confirm the template reads category_tech["identifier"].
